Despite the huge popularity of crossover vehicles, some people prefer SUVs that provide maximum interior space, power, and off-road capability. To this end, Ford has been producing the Expedition, one of the first modern SUVs, since 1996. The EL trim stands for Extended Length and offers more interior room than the standard Ford Expedition model. Its third production cycle is ending with the 2017 model year, which consequently comes with no major changes.
Automotive experts are mostly impressed with the amount of space that the 2017 Expedition cabin provides. On the regular SUV, passenger volume is measured at 160.3 cubic feet, which is more than enough space to accommodate up to nine people. The second and third rows of seats provide enough legroom to prevent anyone from feeling cramped; the second row in particular can slide and recline to adjust legroom according to occupants’ preferences. Cargo space is also incredibly generous; the trunk yields 18.6 cubic feet, but you can stretch cargo room to 160.3 cubic feet by folding down the second and third rows. The Expedition EL is even more cavernous thanks to its extended length. Passenger volume on the EL is measured at 168.3 cubic feet, which is 8 more cubic feet than that of the regular model. The EL is even more impressive regarding cargo space. Regular trunk space is 42.6 cubic feet, which is more than twice the amount of the regular Expedition. Plus, you can extend the cargo space to 130.8 cubic feet.
Another major attribute that the regular and EL versions of the 2017 Ford Expedition share is an ample and efficient powertrain. The Expedition’s workhorse is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine that has an output of 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Although huge, the engine is designed to make the Expedition as fuel-efficient as possible, and that is aided by a 6-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift technology to enable shifting gears on demand. With its powertrain headed by an engine with lots of output and a twin turbocharger, the Expedition never feels underpowered. You can accelerate, climb hills, and switch lanes fast and easily. And thanks to a four-wheel independent suspension and electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, each ride is always smooth and poised.
Last but not least, the 2017 Ford Expedition and Expedition EL have outstanding safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Based on the organization’s crash safety evaluations, the latest version of the Expedition gets a perfect 5-star rating, which places it at the top tier of the large SUV category regarding safety. Such a rating is primarily based on the Expedition’s performance in the NHTSA’s frontal crash and side crash tests; the SUV was awarded 5 stars for each one.
