It wasn’t long ago that sedans dominated American roads. Four-door passenger vehicles were the primary mode of transportation for families, and pretty much every auto brand on the market had at least one or two entries in this segment. With that in mind, it is perhaps surprising to see just how quickly the market has turned away from sedans in favor of small crossovers and SUVs.
Two of the beneficiaries of this swing in popularity are the Ford Escape and Chevy Equinox. Just as you used to be able to spot a Taurus or Malibu on nearly every block, today you can find these SUVs up and down streets from coast to coast. If you’d like to buy a small SUV, you are probably thinking that one of these two would be the right fit, and Five Star Ford Stone Mountain would like to help you out by highlighting the differences between the two models. Let’s get started!
If you are hoping to maximize space in your vehicle while remaining in this affordable segment of the market, you’ll find that these two vehicles are very closely matched. The Escape is technically bigger than the Equinox, but the difference is marginal – just an inch here and there. Interior cargo space is a push, and both the Escape and the Equinox will seat five. There are other places where you can start to draw a clearer line between the Ford and Chevy, but the size is not one of them.
This is a question that is always asked when thinking about making a purchase, so let’s address it here. As is often the case with vehicles in the same market segment, the prices between the Equinox and the Escape are very similar. Both of these models start in the $27,000 area and go up to the mid $30K range when you start to add equipment and upgrade the trim package.
With the Chevy Equinox, you get the standard 1.5L four-cylinder engine across the board. This engine produces 170 horsepower and offers solid gas mileage and around 30 MPG on the highway. You won’t be racing down the road with this modest engine, but it gets the job done.
In the Ford Escape, you’ll have many more options available to you. At the base level, you’ll also find a 1.5L engine, although this one produces a little more power at 181 horsepower. If you’d like to have more muscle under the hood, two upgraded engines are also available. The other gas-only engine is a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo that leaves you with an impressive 250 horsepower. Alternatively, you could go with the gas/electric hybrid option, providing you with 200 horsepower and outstanding fuel economy.
If you are okay with the base engine, there isn’t a lot of difference between the Escape and Equinox. However, when the option to add power is appealing to you, the Escape will be your default choice.
Drivers who love to have as much modern technology available as possible in the cabin are sure to be impressed with the options that come with the Escape. There is plenty of tech standard on all models, but going up into the higher trims brings out all of the bells and whistles.
For starters, you’ll have a big 12.3’’ display in the middle of the dash. This will display the view behind the vehicle as you back up, navigation if you have it added, and many other pieces of information. Also, you can choose to add a head-up display, the SYNC 3 infotainment system, and even FordPass Connect to add Wi-Fi to the experience. You’ll find some nice pieces of technology in the Equinox as well, but Ford has committed to making sure the Escape not only feels modern the day you drive it home but for many more years to come.
It’s hard to ignore the many advantages of driving a Ford Edge. Yes, the Chevy Equinox is perfectly capable of getting you and your family around town, but it doesn’t offer what the Edge can deliver in terms of driving performance and comfort.
